accuracy of estrogen and progesterone receptor assessment in core needle biopsy specimens of breast cancer

abstract
objectives we undertook this study to compare the results of hormone receptor assessment in cnb and surgical samples on our patients. patients and methods hormone receptor status was determined in cnb and surgical samples in breast cancer patients whose cnb and operation had been performed in this institute from 2009 to 2011 and had not undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy. results about 350 patients, 60 cases met all the criteria for entering the study. the mean age was 49.8 years. considering a confidence interval (ci) of 95%, the sensitivity of er and pr assessment in cnb was 92.9% and 81%, respectively and the specificity of both was 100%. the accuracy of cnb was 98% for er and 93% for pr. conclusions our results confirm the acceptable accuracy of er assessment on cnb. the subject needs further investigation in developing countries where omission of the test in surgical samples can be cost and time-saving. background diagnosis of breast cancer is completed through core needle biopsy (cnb) of the tumors but there is controversy on the accuracy of hormone receptor results on cnb specimens.

Accuracy of Estrogen and Progesterone Receptor Assessment in Core Needle Biopsy Specimens of Breast Cancer
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of breast cancer is completed through core needle biopsy (CNB) of the tumors but there is controversy on the accuracy of hormone receptor results on CNB specimens. OBJECTIVES We undertook this study to compare the results of hormone receptor assessment in CNB and surgical samples on our patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Hormone receptor status was determined in CNB and sur...
full textOestrogen and progesterone receptor assessment in core biopsy specimens of breast carcinoma.
AIMS To assess the suitability of core biopsy specimens for the immunohistological assessment of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in breast carcinoma. METHODS Thirty consecutive cases of clinically palpable breast carcinoma, from which both core and excision biopsy specimens were available, were examined. Routinely processed paraffin wax sections were stained using the specific monoclonal...
full textThe Core Needle and Surgical Biopsy Concordance to Detect Estrogen, Progesterone, and Her-2 Receptors in Breast Cancer: A Comparative Study
Background &Objectives;: Evaluation of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and (human epidermal growth factor receptor-2) Her-2 on core needle biopsies (CNBs) is increasingly in use to diagnosis early breast cancer, but its concordance with surgical excision (SE) is not well documented. Methods: The study ...
full textAn overview of assessment of prognostic and predictive factors in breast cancer needle core biopsy specimens.
Needle core biopsy (NCB), as part of triple assessment for preoperative evaluation and diagnosis of breast cancer, is now considered as an established, highly accurate method for diagnosing breast cancer that has replaced either fine needle aspiration cytology or excisional biopsy as the initial diagnostic biopsy procedures in many institutions. In addition to its primary role in establishing a...
full textConcordance Rate between Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy and Core Needle Biopsy in Breast Lesions
Background and Objectives:Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is one of the methods of breast biopsy which is fast, easy and cost effective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance rate between pathologic results of sonography or stereotaxy guided FNAB and guided core needle biopsy (CNB) in the evaluation of breast le...
full textAdjunctive imprint cytology of core needle biopsy specimens improved diagnostic accuracy for breast cancer
OBJECTIVE Recently, therapies targeting the biological characteristics of individual cancers according to markers indicating underlying molecular biological mechanisms have become available. Core needle biopsy (CNB) is widely used, not only to diagnose, but also to determine therapeutic strategies, in patients with breast cancer. Although the diagnostic accuracy of CNB is acceptably high, false...
